United India in the British Raj was a fine amalgamation of culture assimilation that cut across languages, dialects & philosophies, a perfect confluence that was a revelation in itself. It was in this very land that one such family of Dhingras were nurtured. An earthy family of Sikhs with roots in both business & armed forces, Late. Sardar Iqbal Singh Dhingra was the patriarch. Before 1947, posted in the British India armed force division in Sialkot, Pakistan (before partition); headquarters was in Poona, India. Late. Sardar Iqbal Singh Dhingra used to come to Poona periodically on report duty. As fate would have deemed fit, 1947 saw Sardar Iqbal Singh in Poona along with his family on his usual army call routine.
Partition caused a tremendous upheaval, people moving to & fro India & Pakistan. Late. Sardar Iqbal Singh Dhingra lost all his belongings, came virtually empty handed with family to Poona & stayed in an army refugee camp.
Subsequently, Late. Sardar Iqbal Singh Dhingra took voluntary retirement from armed forces to venture into business. Poona fascinated him; he foresaw a neat opening in automobile purchase & sale & started a motor driving school called ‘Poona Motor Driving School’ in 1950. He used to purchase army disposal vehicles for Rs 500/- & disposed them off for Rs 700/-. On one occasion, he purchased an American Ford (Model A) & was on verge of disposing them off at usual Rs 700/-, when some one advised him that he can sell the same for Rs 1,000/- in Hyderabad, India.
Hyderabad at that point of time was teeming with refugees of all kinds, Punjabis were in great depth, you name it …Jats, Sikhs, Sindhis, etc were there & in great numbers. Hyderabad fascinated him, its weather, relaxed pace of life & cosmopolitan population. He sold the car for Rs 1,000/-, made up his mind to stay put in Hyderabad & sold his driving school in Poona to start in 1950, ‘Hind Motor Training School ’. Those days in Hyderabad, Transport Department was under Police Commissioner’s control & motor driving licenses was issued by his staff. He obtained one in 1952, purchased one car & petrol driven truck to usher in ‘Hind Motor Training School ’. in the real sense of the world.
It was sort of unique since it was the first of its kind in the whole of South India. People came from far-off places such as Bangalore, Chennai, Ooty, Visakhapatnam, etc to learn driving & its various nuances. 16 years on, in the year 1968 Sardar Rajinder Singh Dhingra took over reins from his father and lifted it to greater heights. Our school just got better & came to earn an excellent name for self. People still came from far-flung places in Hyderabad & outstation cities.
Sardar Rajinder Singh Dhingra’s son Sardar Mandeep Singh Dhingra, a modern generation youth assisted his father, with passage of time acquired skills & knowledge in automobile field. Better business acumen, people-management skills & a passion for racing saw him lift the school to still greater heights.
History is replete with tales galore, it acts as a great leveller and teaches us all many a thing. We take great inspiration from the heroic tale of late Late. Sardar Iqbal Singh Dhingra.
